Karyotype | hypertriploid; modal number = 72 to 74. The rate of higher ploidies was 4.2%. Most chromosomes were morphologically normal. Three marker chromosomes were common to all cells: del(1) (q11), der (9)t(7;?;9) (q11?;?;p24), and der (10)t(4;10) (q21;q15)., The der (9) was paired in nearly 50% of the cells. Usually one, but occasionally three double minutes (DM) were seen in a few cells. Five copies of normal N5, N7 and N20 were seen in most cells., The X and Y were paired. The presence of Y chromosomes was confirmed in the QM stained preparation. |
Derivation | The SW 1088 cell line was initiated by A. Leibovitz at the Scott and White Clinic, Temple, Texas in 1975 from an astrocytoma taken from a 72 year old male Caucasian. The cell line was received at the ATCC in January, 1982 at passage 23. |

Complete Growth Medium | The base medium for this cell line is ATCC-formulated Leibovitz's L-15 Medium, Catalog No. 30-2008. To make the complete growth medium, add the following components to the base medium: fetal bovine serum to a final concentration of 10%. (Note: The L-15 medium formulation was devised for use in a free gas exchange with atmospheric air. A CO2 and air mixture is detrimental to cells when using this medium for cultivation) |
Subculturing |
Remove medium, rinse with fresh 0.25% trypsin solution, remove trypsin and let the culture sit at room temperature (or at 37°C) until the cells detach (about 10 minutes). Add fresh medium, aspirate and dispense into new flasks. Subculture every 6 to 8 days.
